ABOUT UNITAS 2022

UNITAS (Latin for “UNITED”) is the oldest and largest maritime exercise in the region.  It began in 1959 as a South American and U.S. regional exercise designed to demonstrate a united stance against the spread of the Soviet Union’s influence and presence in Latin America.  The exercise continues to be the most important naval exercise in the U.S. Southern Command AOR promoting partnership and demonstrating U.S. importance and commitment to the region.

U.S. Marines with 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, and members of the Armada de Chile, Infanteria de Marina (Chilean Navy infantry marines) conduct a bilateral field training exercise Magallanes Region, Chile, July 22 to Aug. 2, 2024. U.S. and Chilean marines conducted training to include cold weather live fire and maneuver, mountaineering, and habitat building in order to hone fieldcraft, improve combined task force operations, and increase understanding of each other’s cold weather tactics, techniques, and procedures to support a secure, free, and prosperous western hemisphere.
