ABOUT UNITAS 2022

UNITAS (Latin for “UNITED”) is the oldest and largest maritime exercise in the region.  It began in 1959 as a South American and U.S. regional exercise designed to demonstrate a united stance against the spread of the Soviet Union’s influence and presence in Latin America.  The exercise continues to be the most important naval exercise in the U.S. Southern Command AOR promoting partnership and demonstrating U.S. importance and commitment to the region.

U.S. Marine Maj. David Delvalle, a regional affairs officer with U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South, meets with La Fuerza Armada El Salvador Col. Angel Sergio Lima and 1st Sgt. Rigoberto Antonio Shunico, the director and senior enlisted advisor, respectively, of Centro Regional de Adiestramiento Contra El Crimen Transnacional, at Comando Especial Antiterrorista de la Fuerza Armada base in Ilopongo, El Salvador, Sept. 25, 2019. Delvalle met with the Salvadorian leadership to ensure the partnership remains strong in the region as U.S. Marine units continuously train alongside the Salvadorian forces in the country.
