ABOUT UNITAS 2022

UNITAS (Latin for “UNITED”) is the oldest and largest maritime exercise in the region.  It began in 1959 as a South American and U.S. regional exercise designed to demonstrate a united stance against the spread of the Soviet Union’s influence and presence in Latin America.  The exercise continues to be the most important naval exercise in the U.S. Southern Command AOR promoting partnership and demonstrating U.S. importance and commitment to the region.

U.S. Marines with 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division, and Chilean Marines work together during Exercise SOUTHERN STAR 25 at Fuerte Aguayo, Chile, from May 26 to June 8, 2025. SOUTHERN STAR 25’ is a multinational special operations exercise taking place across Chile from May 26 to June 8, uniting forces from six nations and 10 observing countries, totaling over 2700 participants to enhance interoperability and strengthen global SOF partnerships through joint training from as far north as Antofagasta to the southern region of Punta Arenas. U.S. sailors and partner nation service members observe a multinational group of ships conducting formation exercises during UNITAS aboard the USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) Aug. 23, 2019. The exercises, conducted to improve interoperability while underway with partner nations, involved ships from the United States, Brazil, Argentina, and Peru. UNITAS is the world’s longest-running, annual exercise and brings together multinational forces from 11 countries to include Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Chile Argentina, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Mexico, Great Britain and the United States. The exercise focuses in strengthening the existing regional partnerships and encourages establishing new relationships through the exchange of maritime mission-focused knowledge and expertise during multinational training operations.
