ABOUT UNITAS 2022

UNITAS (Latin for “UNITED”) is the oldest and largest maritime exercise in the region.  It began in 1959 as a South American and U.S. regional exercise designed to demonstrate a united stance against the spread of the Soviet Union’s influence and presence in Latin America.  The exercise continues to be the most important naval exercise in the U.S. Southern Command AOR promoting partnership and demonstrating U.S. importance and commitment to the region.

U.S. Marines with 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division, and Chilean Marines work together during Exercise SOUTHERN STAR 25 at Fuerte Aguayo, Chile, from May 26 to June 8, 2025. SOUTHERN STAR 25’ is a multinational special operations exercise taking place across Chile from May 26 to June 8, uniting forces from six nations and 10 observing countries, totaling over 2700 participants to enhance interoperability and strengthen global SOF partnerships through joint training from as far north as Antofagasta to the southern region of Punta Arenas. SPMAGTF-SC aviation Marines retrograde back to United States
U.S. Marine Cpl. Alexander T. Zink, a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crew chief with the Aviation Combat Element, Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force - Southern Command, signals that the aircraft is ready for departure from Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, Nov. 14, 2017. Over a span of two days, the task force's four helicopters departed Honduras and embarked on a two-day journey back to the United States. The Marines and sailors of SPMAGTF-SC are concluding their deployment to Central America, during which they conducted security cooperation training and engineering projects with their counterparts in several Central American and Caribbean nations.
