ABOUT UNITAS 2022

UNITAS (Latin for “UNITED”) is the oldest and largest maritime exercise in the region.  It began in 1959 as a South American and U.S. regional exercise designed to demonstrate a united stance against the spread of the Soviet Union’s influence and presence in Latin America.  The exercise continues to be the most important naval exercise in the U.S. Southern Command AOR promoting partnership and demonstrating U.S. importance and commitment to the region.

U.S. Marines with 4th Reconnaissance Battalion and Salvadoran marines with the 1st Marine Brigade of El Salvador conduct bilateral training at CENTAM Guardian 2026 in La Union, El Salvador, April 27, 2026. U.S. Marines with 4th Platoon, Charlie Company, 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division spend July 4, 2010, repairing the transmission of an amphibious assault vehicle on a beach in Ancon, Peru. The Marines were embarked aboard transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18) in support of Partnership of the Americas 2010 (POA-10) and Southern Exchange 2010 (SE-10), two separate U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South (MARFORSOUTH) exercises being executed concurrently with partner nation forces from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
