ABOUT UNITAS 2022

UNITAS (Latin for “UNITED”) is the oldest and largest maritime exercise in the region.  It began in 1959 as a South American and U.S. regional exercise designed to demonstrate a united stance against the spread of the Soviet Union’s influence and presence in Latin America.  The exercise continues to be the most important naval exercise in the U.S. Southern Command AOR promoting partnership and demonstrating U.S. importance and commitment to the region.

U.S. service members with U.S. Marine Corps Forces South and U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command conduct FY26 Maritime Staff Talks with Ecuadorian counterparts with Armada del Ecuador in Quito, Ecuador, Feb. 22-27, 2026. Marines from Uruguay perform Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) techniques during UNITAS Gold Partnership of the Americas (POA) 2009. POA, which is being executed simultaneously with UNITAS Gold, is an annual U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South multi-national company-level combined and joint exercise that focuses on enhancing interoperability between U.S. Marines and partner-nation Marines in the areas of amphibious operations, non-combatant evacuation operations (NEO), peacekeeping and disaster relief. Deployed as Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force 24 (SPMAGTF 24), the U.S. Marines of 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, are conducting training with Marines from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, and soldiers from the Royal Canadian Army.
