Marine, sailors deployed to help with Hurricane Earl recovery

August 4, 2016

Marines and sailors with Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force – Southern Command have been tasked with assisting with hurricane recovery operations in Belize after the Central American country was struck by Hurricane Earl early Aug. 4.

The deployment comes as a result of the government of Belize requesting U.S. assistance with recovery efforts.

SPMAGTF-SC deployed to Central America in June, and has been conducting theater security cooperation events and engineering assistance projects in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Belize.  An important part of the unit’s mission – and a reason for its deployment during the hurricane season – is to be prepared to conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations should those contingencies arise.
